Collagen powder – what is collagen, how is it absorbed and what types are there?

by Dirk Boerger on September 18, 2026

Collagen is one of the most important structural proteins in the human body and occurs in many different tissues. That is why we come across collagen today not only in the world of food, but also in food supplements.

At HANOJU, we offer hydrolysed collagen as a powder. Our collagen comes from fish and can easily be stirred into drinks and various dishes.

But what exactly is collagen? What does "hydrolysed" mean, and why is collagen offered as a powder? In this article, we would like to take a closer look at these questions.

What is collagen?

Collagen is a structural or scaffold protein. It belongs to the proteins and is found in various tissues of the human body.

Collagen is made up of amino acids. Particularly characteristic are the amino acids glycine, proline and hydroxyproline. This composition distinguishes collagen from many other protein sources.

Collagen is not a single substance with just one specific composition. Rather, there are different types of collagen that differ in their structure and where they occur in the body.

What types of collagen are there?

Numerous types of collagen are now known. For food supplements, collagen type I, type II and type III are the most relevant.

Collagen type I is the most common form of collagen in the human body. It occurs, for example, in skin, bones and tendons.

Collagen type II is found mainly in cartilage.

Collagen type III occurs together with type I in various tissues, among other places.

Our HANOJU collagen is collagen type I and comes from fish.

What does hydrolysed collagen mean?

Our product is labelled "hydrolysed collagen". This refers to a special form of processing.

Natural collagen has a complex and very stable protein structure. During hydrolysis, this structure is broken down into smaller components by an enzymatic process. These smaller components are often referred to as collagen peptides or collagen hydrolysate.

The result is a powder that is much easier to use in food and drinks.

Hydrolysed collagen is also readily water-soluble and can therefore easily be integrated into your daily diet.

What happens to collagen after it is consumed?

Collagen is a protein, or rather consists of protein components. After being consumed with food, it is processed in the digestive tract – just like other proteins.

In the process, the body breaks down the proteins and peptides it takes in into smaller components, including amino acids and short peptides. These can then be absorbed and used further in the metabolism.

In hydrolysed collagen, smaller peptide structures are already present. Studies have shown that characteristic collagen peptides can be detected in the blood after consumption.

However, this does not mean the same as a particular health effect. The fact that a substance is absorbed and processed in the body does not in itself say anything about what specific effect a food supplement has on a person.

Glycine, proline and hydroxyproline

One special feature of collagen is its amino acid composition.

Our HANOJU collagen contains, among other things, a high proportion of glycine, proline and hydroxyproline. These three amino acids are typical of collagen and make up a large part of its characteristic protein structure.

Hydroxyproline in particular is closely linked to the special structure of collagen. Together with proline and glycine, it forms an essential part of the molecular structure typical of collagen.

It is precisely this special composition that distinguishes collagen from many classic protein sources.

Collagen from fish

Our HANOJU collagen is obtained from fish and comes from France.

Fish collagen is often referred to as a marine collagen source. In our product, we use hydrolysed type I collagen.

For us, origin is an important part of a transparent product description. That is why, for our collagen, we state not only the type of collagen but also the origin of the raw material.

Important: because of its origin, our collagen is not vegetarian or vegan and carries the allergen notice for fish.

Why collagen as a powder?

Collagen is offered in various forms – for example as capsules, tablets or powder.

Powder has a very practical advantage: it can be stirred individually into various foods and drinks.

Our HANOJU collagen can, for example, be stirred into

  • warm drinks,
  • quark,
  • yoghurt,
  • soups,
  • smoothies or
  • other foods.

Taste and consistency may be perceived differently depending on the food or drink used.

How much collagen does our HANOJU product contain?

For our HANOJU collagen powder, the recommended daily portion is 2.4 g of hydrolysed collagen.

One pack contains 250 g of powder. This results in approximately 144 daily portions.

The recommended intake is one portion of 2.4 g once a day. For this, about 2.5 measuring spoons are used.

The powder can be stirred into a warm drink or food as desired.

Peptan® collagen type I

Our product is based on Peptan® collagen type I. This is hydrolysed collagen offered in soluble powder form.

The special amino acid composition with glycine, proline and hydroxyproline is characteristic of collagen.

When selecting our product, it was therefore not only the name "collagen" that was decisive for us, but also the specific form of the raw material.

Collagen and protein

Collagen is a protein and consists of amino acids. Our product consists of 100% hydrolysed collagen.

This distinguishes it from classic protein powders such as whey protein, rice protein or pea protein, for example. Each of these protein sources has a different amino acid composition.

So if you use collagen as a food supplement, you are deliberately choosing a particular protein source with the composition typical of collagen.

Collagen in the diet

Proteins are part of a balanced diet. They provide amino acids that the body needs for various metabolic processes.

Collagen is a special protein source because its amino acid composition differs significantly from many other proteins in food.

Our collagen powder can therefore be an easy way to include hydrolysed collagen in your daily diet.

Food supplements should always be seen as a supplement to, and not a substitute for, a varied diet.

What does research say about collagen?

Collagen and collagen peptides have been studied scientifically for years. Studies look at, among other things, the digestion and absorption of collagen peptides and possible connections between various collagen products and certain bodily functions.

The results vary depending on the area studied. That is why individual studies should not automatically be taken as proof that a collagen product has a particular health effect.

At HANOJU, we deliberately want to remain factual here: our collagen is first and foremost a hydrolysed protein from fish, more precisely collagen type I.

Who is collagen powder interesting for?

Collagen powder can generally be of interest to people who want to specifically supplement their diet with hydrolysed collagen.

The powder form is particularly practical. The daily portion can be integrated into various foods and drinks without much effort.

Whether in your morning yoghurt, in a warm drink or in another meal – there are several ways to use it.
