Superfoods in everyday life: which ones really make sense? 10 popular superfoods compared

by Dirk Boerger on September 22, 2026

Superfoods have long since stopped being an insider tip. Chia seeds, spirulina, chlorella, maca and camu camu can now be found in many kitchens – and of course in our HANOJU shop too.

But with such a large selection, the question quickly arises: Which superfood actually suits me? And does it always have to be the most expensive or most exotic product?

In this article, we take a closer look and present ten popular superfoods. The aim is not to pick a winner. Every food and every plant-based raw material has its own characteristics – and that is exactly what makes the choice interesting.

What does "superfood" actually mean?

At first, the term superfood sounds like a special food group. Scientifically, however, "superfood" is not a clearly defined category.

It usually refers to foods or plant-based raw materials that seem particularly interesting because of their natural composition. These include, for example, seeds, berries, algae, fruits and roots.

At HANOJU, we therefore use the term mainly as a collective name for natural foods and plant products that can be integrated into everyday life in different ways.

And a superfood doesn't have to be complicated. Some products can be added straight to muesli or a smoothie, others are offered as powders, capsules or tablets.

1. Chia seeds – small but versatile

Chia seeds are probably among the best-known superfoods of all.

The small seeds originally come from Central and South America and are very easy to use in the kitchen.

We like chia above all because it is so easy to use. The seeds can be used in muesli, yoghurt, smoothies or desserts, for example.

Another advantage: you don't have to turn them into a complicated recipe. A spoonful of chia in your breakfast can already be a simple way to include the seeds in your diet.

2. Spirulina – the well-known algae powder

Spirulina is a microalga, or more precisely a cyanobacterium, and is often sold as a superfood today.

At HANOJU, we offer spirulina as a powder and in tablet form, among others. The tablets in particular are practical if you don't want to stir the product into drinks or food.

Spirulina is interesting above all because of its natural nutrient profile. As with all superfoods, however, the exact composition depends on the respective product and the recommended portion.

3. Chlorella – another popular microalga

Chlorella is often mentioned together with spirulina. However, the two are different organisms.

Chlorella is a single-celled freshwater alga and is also offered as a powder or in tablet form.

For us, chlorella is a good example of why it pays to take a closer look at superfoods. Just because two products both consist of algae does not mean they are automatically the same.

If you want to choose between spirulina and chlorella, you should therefore compare the respective product information.

4. Maca – the root from the Andes

Maca comes from the Andes in South America and is traditionally used as food.

At HANOJU there are various maca products. These include, for example, different colour varieties such as red, black and yellow maca.

Maca is particularly interesting for anyone who likes to try plant-based root products. Depending on the product, maca can be used as a powder, capsule or tablet.

The powder can be added to smoothies, shakes or other dishes, for example.

5. Camu camu – the small fruit from South America

Camu camu is a fruit from South America that has become known mainly for its natural vitamin C content.

The fruit itself is rarely available in Europe. That is why camu camu is often found as a powder or extract.

This is where a typical difference between classic foods and superfood products becomes apparent: the original raw material is processed and therefore offered in a form that is easier to store and use.

6. Açaí – the berry from the Amazon region

Açaí berries come from South America and have become known mainly through modern food culture.

Today, açaí is best known from bowls, smoothies and various powder products.

The taste is often described as fruity and slightly earthy. If you like making smoothie bowls, you can combine açaí with other fruits, for example.

Here, too, the most exotic product is not automatically the best choice. What matters is whether its taste and use fit into your own everyday life.

7. Barley grass – green and uncomplicated

Barley grass is also one of the well-known green superfoods.

It is usually offered as a powder and stirred into water, juices or smoothies, for example.

Green plant powders in particular are interesting for many people because they can be added to drinks with little effort.

At HANOJU you will find various grasses and plant powders, so you can try different variants depending on your personal preference.

8. Turmeric – more than just a spice

Turmeric is first and foremost known from the kitchen. The yellow root is part of many Asian dishes and gives food its typical colour.

Today, turmeric is also offered as a powder or in capsules.

For us, turmeric is a nice example of how superfoods don't necessarily have to be exotic or complicated. A raw material can be both a classic spice and part of modern dietary concepts.

9. Goji berries – a fruity classic

Goji berries have been among the well-known superfoods for many years.

The red berries are often sold dried and can be eaten straight away or added to muesli and other dishes, for example.

With dried fruits, you should of course always look at the ingredients list and the respective product description, because processing and composition can differ between products.

10. Hemp seeds – a superfood from the plant

Hemp seeds are another example of how superfoods don't necessarily have to come from faraway countries.

The seeds of the hemp plant are sold as food and can be sprinkled over salads, muesli or other dishes, for example.

Hemp seeds are particularly interesting for anyone who likes to combine different plant-based foods.

So which superfood is the right one?

We hear exactly this question at HANOJU again and again.

Our answer is quite simple: it depends on what you are looking for and how you want to use the product.

If you enjoy breakfast, you could try chia seeds or other seeds, for example.

If you like smoothies, you might find powders such as barley grass, spirulina or maca interesting.

If you prefer uncomplicated intake, you can take a look at capsules or tablets.

And if you want to use natural foods as directly as possible, you may prefer dried fruits or seeds.

Powder, capsules or the whole food?

This is another question we hear frequently.

Powders have the advantage that they can be added to many foods and drinks. In return, you should be able to get used to their taste and texture.

Capsules and tablets, on the other hand, are particularly uncomplicated. The portion is easy to read and the product is easy to take with you.

With seeds and dried fruits, in turn, the classic use as food is more in the foreground.

None of these forms is fundamentally "better". It depends on what is practical in your own everyday life.

Does a superfood have to be exotic?

No.

We actually find that particularly interesting.

Many foods sold today under the term superfood do come from other regions of the world. At the same time, however, there are also numerous nutrient-rich foods closer to home.

The term superfood should therefore not lead to local foods suddenly seeming less interesting.

For us, it is much more about variety.

What should you look out for when buying?

When we choose a new product ourselves, we look at the product information first.

Points of interest include:

  • Which ingredient is actually contained?

  • Where does the raw material come from?

  • Is it a powder, extract, capsules or a food?

  • How large is the recommended portion?

  • Is it available in organic quality?

  • Which additives does it contain?

  • How is the product used?

Especially with products that have similar names, the compositions can differ considerably.

That is why it is worth looking beyond the front of the packaging.

Our tip: don't try everything at once

When you first start looking into superfoods, the choice can quickly become overwhelming.

We would therefore not buy ten different products at the same time.

It is better to start with one product that fits well with your own habits.

If you eat muesli in the morning, for example, you could start with chia seeds. If you make smoothies every day, you could try a plant powder. And if you like things particularly uncomplicated, you can take a look at capsules or tablets.

This way you will quickly notice which products you actually use regularly – and which tend to stay in the kitchen cupboard.

Superfoods at HANOJU

In our HANOJU shop, we have put together a large selection of different superfoods. These include algae, seeds, berries, roots, plant powders and other natural raw materials.

We do not want to claim that a single superfood can replace a balanced diet. On the contrary: for us, a varied diet is the foundation.

Superfoods can be an interesting addition to it – especially if they fit well into your everyday life.

And that is exactly why it is worth not just looking for the best-known name, but taking a closer look at the individual products.

Which superfood suits you?

Maybe it's chia. Maybe spirulina. Maybe maca. Or perhaps you will discover a product at HANOJU that you have never even heard of before.

In any case, the world of superfoods is big – and there is plenty to discover.
