The evergreen coconut palm has no branches and grows to between 20 and 25 meters tall. The coconut palm's tuft consists of approximately 30 pinnate leaves, each three to seven meters long. Due to their arrangement and texture, these leaves can withstand even strong sea storms. From the palm's sixth year until it reaches approximately 60 years of age, the flowers develop from the leaf axils, each containing 40 female and up to 10,000 male flowers. The plant bears fruit year-round, so the coconuts continuously ripen and can be harvested year-round. The average yield per palm is 30 to 40 nuts per year.
In 2016, more than 59 million tons of coconuts were harvested worldwide. The ten largest producing countries together accounted for 89.9% of the global harvest. A total of 1,223,875 hectares were registered as cultivated areas.
