Mushrooms - The slightly different medicinal herbs

To be clear: mushrooms are not medicinal herbs. Fungi are a completely separate life form, unlike animals and plants. They cannot move like animals and do not photosynthesize like a green plant. This makes them particularly exciting in every respect. Because they function completely differently as living organisms, they also contain substances that no other living organism possesses. This gives rise to both the risk of poisoning and the potential for healing. This is where mushrooms come into play. Mushrooms are the counterpart to traditional medicinal plants and herbs. Some molds have been used for a long time. The brush molds of the genus Penicillium are used to produce penicillin, and vitamin C or ascorbic acid, which is contained in thousands of medicines and foods as a preservative, is not extracted from lemons, but for decades from a genetically modified black mold of the species Aspergillus niger. The actually edible large mushrooms, on the other hand, are usually added to food as an exotic ingredient without being given much attention. However, they are the real mushrooms, whose effects have been known in the Far East for centuries and whose ingredients are only gradually being discovered.

Mushrooms - Great Variety

The most well-known mushroom is probably the shiitake mushroom, Lentinula edodes. These mushrooms originate from China and Japan and have long been known as mushrooms there. In our country, shiitake mushrooms soon became a fashionable food in the new Far Eastern cuisine. It is now known that they can be used as mushrooms and, thanks to their special ingredients, are a very healthy dietary supplement. This makes them perhaps the best and most famous mushrooms.
However, since mushrooms, just like medicinal plants, have diverse constituents, it's impossible to use a single species for every health-promoting effect. Therefore, research into mushrooms' suitability as fungi is ongoing, and a considerable number of species have now been compiled. Even the ubiquitous button mushroom is considered a mushroom and is said to have many different health-promoting effects. In any case, it is a very good and healthy edible mushroom. Other well-known mushrooms include the oyster mushroom, the sun mushroom, the Jew's ear, the squirrel mushroom, and several others. More species will likely be added in the near future, opening up a wide range of uses.

Effect of mushrooms

Mushrooms are primarily edible. They are delicious and enrich the diet. However, because they contain their own unique nutrients, they are also beneficial to health. The specific nutrients found in each mushroom vary greatly. Accordingly, there are many ways to prepare mushrooms, using them as a main course or as an addition to a variety of healthy dishes.
